The City of Fort Collins City Attorney Office has an opening for a full-time Prosecution Attorney position. This position will be a part of the City's prosecution team, prosecuting violations of the City's ordinances including traffic laws, criminal laws, building codes, and nuisance and zoning enforcement. Additional assignments will likely include liquor or marijuana licensing enforcement, advising Fort Collins Police and Code Enforcement officers, and special projects. We will select a top candidate from applicants who fulfill either Assistant City Attorney I or Assistant City Attorney II qualifications. Differentiating factors between the Attorney I and II designation include job qualifications, level of supervisory oversight, complexity of assignments, and project management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of this position for an Attorney I or II are expected to include the following:
Work in a team office environment (an Attorney I can expect to have some direct attorney supervision).Conduct arraignments and pre-trial conferences with members of the public and defense attorneys concerning alleged ordinance violations, and complete related court processes. Represent the City in municipal court hearings and trials regarding ordinance violations, and in hearings before the liquor and marijuana licensing authorities. Defend appeals of municipal court convictions. Write briefs and motions and respond to motions, conduct legal research and draft legal opinions.Interpret laws, rules, and regulations.
Provide legal advice to City Council, City departments, and officials.Draft code language and prepare ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents. Identify potential and actual legal issues raised by City policies and practices and recommend actions to address issues. Provide legal advice and trainings for police and specially commissioned officers. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with law enforcement, code enforcement, and other specially commissioned officers, and partner agencies. Support the City and City Attorney's commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Present trainings for law enforcement, code enforcement, and other city clients and community organizations.
In addition, an Attorney II may be expected to administer or manage projects in the City Attorney's Office by assignment.
