Position Overview

Administrative Functions
• Assist the Director of Nursing Services in overseeing daily nursing activities in compliance with applicable regulations.
• Develop, maintain, and update policies and procedures governing nursing services.
• Ensure nurses' station reference materials (e.g., PDRs, professional standards, and regulations) remain current.
• Recommend materials to support nursing service operations.
• Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is up to date and followed by all personnel.
• Provide written and oral reports to the Director as needed.
• Review departmental policies, procedures, and job descriptions, making revision recommendations.
• Assist in coordinating nursing services with other departments for comprehensive resident care.
• Ensure nursing staff comply with job descriptions and quality assurance programs.
• Participate in facility inspections and assist in survey preparations.
• Review and update residents' discharge plans as necessary.
• Meet with nursing and support staff to plan services and activities.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
• Complete accident/incident reports and ensure policy compliance.
• Interpret and enforce policies for personnel, residents, visitors, and regulatory agencies.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding user credentials, resident information, and facility records.
Committee Functions
• Attend and participate in facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Quality Assessment).
• Assist in preparing reports for nursing service programs.
• Provide information to the Quality Assurance Committee.
• Develop agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings and review discharge plans.
• Implement committee recommendations as instructed.
Personnel Functions
• Ensure adequate staffing of licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants per shift.
• Develop and delegate work assignments effectively.
• Supervise and support charge nurses.
• Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have completed training programs.
• Conduct daily rounds to ensure compliance with nursing standards and report findings.
• Monitor absenteeism and report concerns to the Director.
• Enforce departmental policies, including dress codes.
• Address personnel complaints and grievances.
• Maintain a positive and supportive work environment.
• Conduct regular staff meetings to address concerns and improve services.
• Participate in performance evaluations, staffing decisions, and disciplinary actions.
• Report occupational exposures and incidents of fraud as per facility policies.
• Ensure compliance with computer security protocols.
Nursing Care Functions
• Inform staff of new admissions and ensure readiness of rooms.
• Greet and assist new residents upon arrival.
• Conduct rounds with physicians and ensure timely documentation of progress notes and orders.
• Communicate changes in residents' conditions to physicians and family members.
• Monitor residents' physical and emotional status daily.
• Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
• Review nursing notes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Provide direct nursing care as needed, including IVs, specimen collection, and vital signs monitoring.
• Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions for problem areas.
• Monitor medication administration and adherence to treatment schedules.
• Conduct daily inspections of nursing areas to maintain cleanliness and safety.
• Meet with residents and families to address concerns.
• Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents and notify families of resident deaths.
Staff Development
• Assist in developing and conducting in-service training programs.
• Ensure compliance with training requirements (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Infection Control).
• Participate in clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
• Attend continuing education programs to maintain licensure.
Safety and Sanitation
• Assist in developing and enforcing safety standards for nursing services.
• Ensure compliance with infection control protocols.
• Maintain an adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Enforce proper handling of hazardous materials and infection control procedures.
• Monitor staff adherence to hand hygiene and safety regulations.
• Participate in fire and disaster preparedness drills.
Equipment and Supply Management
• Recommend nursing equipment and supply needs.
• Ensure adequate stock levels of medications and medical supplies.
• Assist in developing a preventive maintenance program for nursing equipment.
• Ensure safe operation and usage of medical equipment by trained personnel.
Care Plan and Assessment Functions
• Participate in developing written assessments of residents' nursing needs.
• Develop and update individualized care plans in collaboration with residents and healthcare professionals.
• Ensure nursing staff reference and follow care plans.
• Review medical and nursing treatments to ensure they align with care plans.
Budget and Planning Functions
• Stay informed about economic conditions affecting nursing services.
• Recommend budget adjustments to maintain quality care.
• Report any suspected fraudulent activities related to billing or financial practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• Assist in the overall supervision and management of nursing staff.
• Assume administrative authority and accountability for assigned duties.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
• Must possess a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience, preferably in long-term care.
Skills & Abilities:
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting policies, procedures, and technical documentation.
• Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and supervisory skills.
• Ability to work with residents, families, personnel, and regulatory agencies.
• Knowledge of nursing practices, laws, and guidelines for nursing facilities.
• Compassion, patience, and ability to handle challenging situations.
Certifications & Licenses:
• Active, unencumbered RN license in this state.
• Current CPR certification.
• Preferred experience with PCC (PointClickCare).
• Compliance with continuing education and licensing requirements.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday.
• Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
• Capability to handle the mental and emotional demands of the role.
• Ability to push, pull, move, or lift at least 25 pounds.
• May require assisting in emergency evacuations.
Work Environment
• Work is performed in both office and clinical settings.
• Frequent interruptions and interaction with residents, families, and staff.
• Exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and unpredictable behaviors.
• May require extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
