Job Summary
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Advisor to the General Counsel & Chief of Staff is a member of the Legal leadership team responsible for various special projects and initiatives under the direction of the General Counsel. The Senior Advisor is an experienced, progressive leader and subject matter expert providing direction and guidance on legal strategy and enhancements. Provides legal advice to Flagstar Bank and responsible for advising business partners on various issues, such as strategic initiatives, legal analysis, and recommendations to senior management on state and federal and state laws impacting business and operational practices.

Job Responsibilities:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as an advisor to the General Counsel and provide recommendations and strategic insight on legal matters and areas of priority.
• Provide expert advice to General Counsel, leadership team, and relevant business leaders of the status and significant developments in the law or pending legal matters.
• Develop or refine strategies, policies or operations needed to support Legal department in line with best practice.
• Advise and counsel business units on potential legal risks, review proposed policies and practices, and provide appropriate legal advice.
• Manage special projects or processes under the direction of the General Counsel.
• Participate in appropriate legal and industry groups to identify best practices in operating and managing legal matters.
• Regularly interact with business units to understand company operations, initiatives, policies and procedures, identify potential legal risks and help the bank meet regulatory requirements and expectations.
• Recommend and supervise the appropriate use of outside counsel while manage outside counsel costs and budgets.
• Act as liaison with outside counsel on pending legal matters.
• Responsible for talent management functions including: employment, performance goals and evaluations, staff development/training, disciplinary actions, succession planning and ensuring all staff comply with compliance requirements.

• Performs special projects, and additional duties and responsibilities as required.
• Consistently adheres to regulatory and compliance policies and standards linked to the job as listed and complete required compliance trainings. Accountable to maintain compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• Minimum 15+ years corporate experience at a large bank or law firm leading a range of legal matters.
• Member in good standing of bar of state in United States, with ability to become a member of the State Bar of New York or Michigan through corporate affiliation or reciprocity.
